Personal Statement

Baseball became a passion of mine in 2009, when my Kids Sports team won the Junior Baseball Organization ,Inc. Midget National Championship. I decided that day that nothing would hold me back from playing.

This last season (2016) really put that commitment to the test. It all started during spring break; it was the day before our first tournament, and we had a light batting practice to fine tune our hitting. One of my teammates let go of a baseball bat while I was looking down, placing a ball on my tee. I looked up to see an Easton Mako barrel inches away from my face. It contacted my three upper front teeth knocking them completely out, as well as chipping two on the bottom. When my parents showed up to rush me to oral surgery, I had two conditions. First, I wanted my smile back (after three years of braces I liked my smile and was disheartened it was ruined). Second, that they would permit me to play in the preseason tournament. My parents agreed and after hours of surgery and having three teeth returned to my mouth, we bought a face shield to accommodate my play. I drove an hour and a half for the game the next day only to get one at bat. I was scheduled to be DH after my coaches were informed of my return, but I was late due to three root canals I had had that morning, preventing me from being one of the starting nine.

Later in the 2016 season, my left ulnar nerve became inflamed; once again, I returned to the status of DH only. I ended the year with three things:  five root canals, physical therapy appointments twice a week that prevented my participation in a pre-paid Stanford camp in July, 2016, and an all-conference honor as a utility player following my spring season.  Make that four: our D-1 summer team won the state championship for the first time ever with me DHing at a .440 average.

I look forward to overcoming any challenge that collegiate baseball and/ or academics throws me.  By the way, academics are the easy part; I'm  largely in control of those outcomes.  The hard part is the lack of exposure I've had prior to this senior year.
