Personal Statement

My name is Nate Witherspoon and I’ve had a passion for baseball my entire life.  It was just about all I ever thought about growing up.  I’ve played for many winning teams over the years including a Missouri State Legion Championship Title in 2013 and a 7-6 second place finish in the 2014 Missouri State Legion Championship. I am a solid player and get along well with my teammates and coaches. I’m a reliable leader with a strong work ethic both on the field and in school, and I have a good sense of humor.  I'll be traveling and playing this summer with my club team, the St. Louis Pirates.

My goal now is to prepare for and play at the collegiate level and I’m sure I have what it takes.  I’ve had much success in the past and I expect to have continued success in the future.  I’m a durable 6’4” lefty with a strong arm.  During the off season I work hard on conditioning with a focus on my core and lower body.  Regular bullpen sessions and the use of video analysis help me to fine tune my pitching mechanics and I believe I will be throwing in the upper 80’s by summer 2015.  I feature a fastball in the 83-84 range (touching 85-86), a curve, slider and changeup.  I also play first base and have typically hit above .400.

Getting a good education is also very important to me.  As much as I love playing baseball I know that it won’t last forever and it takes much more in order to be a well rounded person.  I haven’t settled on my career direction yet but I’m currently interested in exploring business and finance.

Coach Tim Clubb's reference from June 2014: "Nate will be a young Junior in his next High School season. He just recently turned 16. He has a tall, long athletic build that has plenty of room for filling out. He is a left handed pitcher and first baseman. I see his potential at the next level as a pitcher. He has good fast ball velocity for his age and I expect it will increase 2-3MPH in each of his last two years in HS. He has a nice change up and a developing slurve. He will need to continue to improve on those two secondary pitches. He fields his position well and holds runners well also. I project him as collegiate pitcher at some level. Nate is a leader. He is intense but under control. He gets along well with his teammates and is easy to coach."

  • FB 83, SL 74, CH 72, 1B 83, 40 (5.36). Rated 8.5. Scout Notes: LHP Nate Witherspoon (2016, Eureka, MO) has a prototypical projectable 6-4/180 frame and long and loose actions on the mound. He was 81-83 mph on his fastball with plenty more to come in the future. His change up was his best present pitch, with lots of sink and run, and he flashed a short slider a couple of times. Named as Top Prospect: Witherspoon has a loose and athletic 6-4/180 build and you could see his overall athleteicism during drills before he took the mound. He was 81-83 mph with his fastball with plenty more in there as he gets stronger. He also threw probably the best changeup of any pitcher at the event. Named to Top Prospect Team: Nate Witherspoon is a 2016 LHP/1B with a 6-4 180 lb. frame from Eureka, MO who attends Eureka HS. Long and loose athletic build, very projectable physically. Works from the stretch and a low hand start, full clean arm action, high 3/4's arm slot, works downhill well. Low 80's fastball, topped out at 83 mph, no reason he shouldn't continue to add velocity as he gets stronger. Fastball is mostly straight, keeps in low in the zone and induces early count ground ball contact. Outstanding change up for his age with nice sink an dive, maintains arm speed and arm slot well on the pitch. Rare slider but it showed the proper power and plane and should develop nicely. Showed good athleticism defensively at first base. Follow closely, is just going to keep getting better and better with time. Good student.
