Personal Statement

I am a very hard worker on and off the field. I work hard to keep my grades up, be a good person and respected in the community, and help kids on my little brothers team learn to play baseball. In the last year I moved my primary position from corner infield to pitcher and have become good at it through hard work and lots of practice. I know I have a lot of room to grow at being a pitcher but have increased my velocity 10mph up to almost 90mph as a Sophomore 16 years old, and will continue to work hard to improve. My goal is and always has been to be the best baseball player I can be at any position, and believe I can play corner infield as well as pitch and hit for any team that gives me a chance. I will always be a team player and do what is needed of me for the team to be its best, I will always work to be the best player on the field and the best person I can be off the field. My goal is to play a high level of college baseball and hopefully improve enough to keep playing after college at the professional level.

Jarred Wood is a 2017 RHP/3B, 1B with a 6-3 195 lb. frame from Cedar Rapids, IA who attends Thomas Jefferson. Large, atheltic build with broad shoulders and a lean, projectable frame with room to fill. Primary right-handed pitcher, shows a full hand path in delivery with a long arm action through the backside. Gets on top consistently with three-quarter arm slot and lives down in the zone with fastball remaining balanced throughout. Slight hip turn at top of delivery with high leg raise, ball comes out cleaning topping 88 mph with fastball that shows short running life to arm side. Short depth on 11-5 curveball, worked ahead consistently and showed nice changeup from arm slot that mimics fastball at 78 mph. Short and compact arm action at first base, gets on top of throws well, shows footwork with a quick pivot and gets it out of glove quickly. Right-handed hitter, starts with a slightly open base and medium set. Wrapped barrel at top, line drive swing plane with a quick barrel coming through the zone, keeps mechanics simple in the box and creates line drive contact to pull side. Very good student. PG Grade 9.0

Jarred Wood Named to Top Prospect Team and Top Prospect list is a 2017 RHP/3B/1B with a 6-3 195 lb. frame from Cedar Rapids, IA who attends Thomas Jefferson HS. Big and strong athletic build, mature for his age. Low hand delivery, deep arm action in back, high 3/4's arm slot, good direction to the plate. Mid-80's fastball topped out at 86 mph, gets good sinking action at times and works downhill consistently, maintained his velocity well. Threw two different breaking balls, slower curveball had better spin and quality than slurve-type slider, curveball flashed sharp biting action. Change up has potential to be a solid third pitch. Right handed hitter, deep low hand load, rotational swing with a high finish, has some raw bat speed and power potential. Nice young pitcher with good present stuff. Good student. PG Grade 9.0

Curveball good rotation at times with varying break. Slider was tighter with flat break in upper half of zone. Split is best secondary pitch with late action at bottom of zone at 76-77 mph. High Follow in 2017 class with sturdy build that will continue to add strength and size. Knee to knee trigger into short stride. Stiff lower half in swing. Lower launch position with hands. Slight uphill swing plane causing some top spin at contact. Pull approach with decent strength in bat. 87 mph exit velocity off tee. Easy actions at third base. Solid glove. Ability to make non-routine. Shows ability on backhand play. Has arm strength. Pie arm action across with cut action on ball. 85 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Big and strong build, very strong for a sophomore especially in the lower half. Very long arm action, fully extended high 3/4's arm slot, big leg raise and turn, medium effort release, lots going on but he repeats it well, arm is loose and fast coming through. Mid-80's fastball, topped out at 87 mph, mostly straight with good angle when down in the zone, can improve vertical command and consistency. Split change is a quality pitch, has a very good release for the pitch, gets hard diving action at times, has confidence in the pitch. Soft curveball spin at present, occasional downer depth, difficult arm action to throw a curveball from; might develop a slider in the future. Right handed hitter, aggressive swing approach, deep load, has some bat speed and the ball comes off the barrel well 89mph Exit velocity at the event. Good student. PG Grade 9.0

This year's top prospect is 2017 RHP Jarred Wood. Wood showcased a mid 80's fastball and has continued to increase velocity since the event; touching as high as 88 mph. His deceptive arm arm action, ability to throw two off-speed pitches for strikes, and physical stature shoots him to the top of the list. Competition was heated in this event; as it included many prospects who will be ultimately playing a very high level of college baseball. TOP overall PROSPECTS 1. Jarred Wood, RHP, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 2017 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Thick physical sturdy build. Body projects to get bigger and stronger. Good rhythm and sequence to delivery. Gathers well and his balanced over the rubber. Throws from high 3/4 pie arm slot with long arm action creating occasional sink. Tends to land open causing him to miss arm side. Direction though is good towards home plate. Fastball is heavy thrown at 81-85 at this event in December. At times will be on slide of breaking ball causing flat spin. Splitter is advanced for a player his age with good depth. Overall High Follow in 2017 class and will be up towards the top when state wide rankings are released. Youngest players to be selected for this event.08/04/2014 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Jarred continues to show at a 1B/RHP but currently projects best at 1B for the next level where he has improved his baseball abilities. Defensive abilities are solid as he displays outstanding foot work around the bag and is a quality receiver. He works to get around ground balls and squares up well. Hands are soft /sure and he consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. Throws are accurate, flashing carry but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting grade has improved, now showing solid abilities through a squared / athletic setup and an aggressive approach. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with baseball exploding off the bat when centered. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 79-82 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break and he maintains arm speed on his change, displaying arm side run / sink. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will improve as he builds more arm strength. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable. With 2 years to further develop, Jarred has the makings of a special type player and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way guy.

Monticello, IA Jarred is a freshman two-way player (1B/RHP) that has good overall ability. Offensively, he generates good bat speed and has strength at contact. He is coordinated with his hands/hips and is level with the barrel. He flashed pull side pop and will continue to improve with utilization of contact points. Defensively, he had athletic actions and moved well to the ball. He showed a lot of potential at first with good athleticism. On the hill, he threw three pitches - topping out at 78 MPH with his FB. His splitter was his best off-speed pitch, which he threw with solid feel. He showed raw mechanics, but displayed a lot of potential with a throwing program to strengthen and add arm action consistency. All-in-all, Wood has time to build off his natural ability and strengthen his 6'2/170 lbs frame for high level high school play.

As a first baseman he had good fielding actions with playable arm strength and online carry. As an infielder he showed good fielding actions with good footwork and playable arm strength. Graded out higher as a first baseman. As a right handed pitcher he threw from a 3/4 arm slot, fastball had arm side run. Can improve on the mound by using his lower half.
