My sixth love in life, behind God, my parents and my two brothers, but sometimes only because my mom MAKES me put my brothers in this sequence, has always been baseball. I must have been born with an extra gene of competitiveness, because I wanted so badly to win every game of four-year-old soft toss, my first exposure to an organized baseball league, that in my position as pitcher, which seemed to be directly in line with the magnetic field the batted ball traveled ninety-nine percent of the time, I fielded that ball and launched it to first base for an out with no regard for the concentration factor my first base teammate was NOT applying to this competition prompting his mom to insist he wear a batting helmet in the field. That competitive spirit which garnered me NO friends in my early baseball career has served me well in the intervening years, not only in every sport I have ever played, but in the classroom as well.
While my love for learning has never exceeded my love for baseball, with maturity I have developed an appreciation for the value of an exceptional education and an understanding that it will be the yardstick by which the success of my life and career are measured long after my baseball playing days have come to an end. As I embark on the path to a higher education, the discipline, perseverance, and tenacity I have acquired through years of highly competitive baseball tournament play have prepared me to transition from a determined student to responsible and productive adult. In my perfect world, that transition is perfectly paired with my sixth love in life and my future career will be the better for it.
